~Addressing One Of My Worst Fears~

THE DENTIST!

First I want to say that right now I am drugged on Lortab and have been since about 1:30pm yesterday afternoon, so forgive me if anything doesn't make sense :-)

Last week I made my way to a place I dread, the dentist. Yep its one of my worst fears I have (when I get into a dentist chair I tense up so much, my whole body tightens and both my arms and legs are crossed as to not let anybody in). Never the less I had to go because half a filling I had, had fallen out and I was in a lot of pain through my ear area and up the side of my face, plus I could feel a cavity in another tooth and I had put it off long enough. So I go in and after his assistant takes x-rays, I get this whole lecture from a very nice dentist on how most people me included wait to long to come in and get their teeth checked never mind don't go when they don't have insurance and then end up paying more in the long run.

He proceeded to tell me that I was going to need a rootcanal on the tooth that lost the filling. Then he more or less tells me that though some dental insurance pays some , most more or less are useless. That most will give you a limit of about $1,000 a person a year, when it should be updated to about $5,000. He told me what my options were and off I went.

I have to say I was very glad on how upfront he was with me about it all. When I left I got the impression that they didn't do payment plans except for something called CareCredit which I wasn't going to do so I thought my only option was to get the darn thing pulled and then replace the tooth later on. Sunday night I was in the worst pain, it was so bad that I was in tears and my older two wanted to take me to the ER, I declined. I called the dentist Monday morning and told him I wanted it pulled.

I couldn't believe my ears, he was doing all he could to talk me out of it, and to save the tooth which is what I really wanted and said he would work out a payment plan for me if I wanted to save the tooth. So yesterday I started what is going to be a long relationship with my dentist. I went in to begin treatment on the infected tooth and to get my other teeth into better health condition. He took out and medicated the infected area and put a temporary filling in there for now until it heals. Iam now high on Lortab for pain which doesn't completely take care of the pain!!!! Next week he will fill the other tooth and we will go from there.

I can say this I haven't found a dentist I liked this much since I left New York 6 years ago. I like his honesty and of course his willingness to work with me and my financial situation.

I have to say part of my teeth being in this condition is my own fault and some is hereditary, my mom has bad gums and dad has bad teeth and some is from the meds I have been on for the Lupus. What I wouldn't do to turn the clock back some and take better care of my teeth!

Oh my god! I'm in the same boat. I haven't been to the dentist in probably 4 years. Reason being is that we don't have dental insurance. Never had. We have good insurance but never included dental. So my view was that the kids always come first. So with dental bills and ortho bills I wasn't able to afford for me to go. I've been putting it off forever. So I finally made an appointment (was with a new dentist- another story why I dumped my old dentist) and I went this week. I was told that my teeth are in pretty good shape for not going for that long. But, (there is always a but) I do need a crown, root cleaning on a couple teeth and two fillings. Totaling 3700.00 - Now just where the heck am I gonna come up with this??
So, I'm in the same boat, trying to figure out what to do.
I feel your grief !

I, too, hate the dentist. And should also take better care of my teeth/gums. In fact, I have an appt card hanging on my fridge right now because I'm due for a visit and I'm ignoring it.

I dread going to the dentist too! I really need to go, haven't been in a while. Good thing is that we do have dental insurance and thank God because I have a feeling that they will have to do a lot of work.

your dentist is really nice and not to mention very upfront and not just trying to do "business"
Root canal isn't much fun for sure from what i heard, but it's better to get it taken care of now before it gets worse!
Aren't you just all skied up when you are on lortab? LOL!
the last time I got my wisdom teeth pulled, they have me on oxycodone and man.... I was puking left and right from that pain meds!!
I never like dentist either, eventhough my dentist is cool, but i'm dreading it...speaking of which, i just got a card as a reminder to have my yearly cleaning !!!! FUN!!!!!!

The thing is I do have dental insurance, it just doesnt cover what you think it would!

Example: The tooth that needs work will cost $1216 to get all I need done on it, my insurance will only cover $289.39 of that, yes you read right.

Hugs Suz

oh sweetie!! i'm so sorry. i hope you feel better soon! he sounds like a lovely dentist. i hope that you can totally be at ease with him.

lol...on a side note (but still a dental one...) one day, when i was about 16...i had to take my mom to her dentist to get her root canal done. she needed a designated driver & i was "volunteered". lol!! well, she goes in, for what i think will be a terribly long time. i settled down in for a nice long read. about 20 minutes into this...i hear a blood curdling scream & look up to see my mother STREAKING out of the office! turns out he hadn't waited long enough for the meds to kick in & he hit a nerve! man, was she freaked out. and i (of course, being the loving daughter that i am....)laughed my ever lovin ass off. lol!!

she did eventually go back to have it finished. and he's still her dentist to this day.

don't get freaked. but i thought you could use a chuckle. lol!

Oh, sorry you have to go through all of that, not to mention the pain. I'm so glad you found a good dentist though. That's one thing that is hard about us moving every few years - having to change doctors all of the time. I hope everything turns out well for you!

I've got terrible teeth and understand both your extreme fear and also, the agony of what you've got coming. Seriously, I've got a couple root canals, more crowns and fillings in my head than anyone person should have. I'm just hoping my girl gets her daddy's teeth!!
Feel better!

what a blessing you have found in this dentist. I am so glad he is working with you and that you are going to be painfree and with a repaired tooth. I read somewhere that tooth issues are the one common denominator across all economic and social lines that connects the world. We all need our teeth (obviously) but not all of us can afford to care for them properly. It's just heartbreaking. Hugs to you. I for one have not been to a dentist since Lily was born 3 yrs ago.
